How to save civilization -- Brody

One of peoples doomsday fears is a large comet with an earth bound path. In the movies thetry to blow it up before it hits earth, but I've never really heard any better suggestions; therefore as a gesture of kindness I offer you the solution to tackling any moderately sized comet.

I call it atmospheric buffering.

Once you've determined a comets path through our atmosphere all you need to do is buffer the atmosphere it well be traveling through (Maybe buffering is the wrong word, but I can't think of a better one at the moment cause my attention is focused on saving your life). By Buffering I mean fill the air with large particles designed to accelerate the disintegration of the Meteoroid. If you can quadruple the speed of disintegration you can cut the ferocity of impact by four (a lie, but some ratio exists).

I'm not sure if it's possible to accelerate the rate of disintegration to a life saving point, that's to be future determined.

  1. so in doing so even if it does save our lives all the shit thats in the sky kills us anyway because it creates the equivilant of a nuclear winter??

  2. Well, here are your choices ryan:
You can either be incinerated upon impact if you are in the asteroids path, or die in a nuclear-like winter. We can either let the asteroid generate the nuclear winter (from impact), or we can create it ourself by pumping shit into te atmosphere. At least they latter allows us to throw away money and be constructive.

  3. Here's an actual proposal that might work:
If we can pinpoint the asteroid years in advance and accurately map its trajectory (not hard to do), we can send out a small shuttle to intercept it. Upon interception, we tether the shuttle to it and gradually pull it off course via thrusters or sails capable of using solar winds. The sooner we can spot the asteroid in advance, the less distance we have to nudge the rock body off course so it will miss Earth.

  4. However, if we spot the asteroid days before a collision with Earth, we are fucked. Nukes won't work and praying won't work.

  5. Ya, I don't think this idea would work anymore, not because of self created nuclear winter, but because I just can't visualize disintegrating a five mile wide chunk of rock in time. A rock the size of chicago seems pretty well unstoppable at first thought, but nothings impossible.
